Why Does Cancer Is A Drag Have Legs?

This logo was designed with love for a special friend who was going through one of the most trying times in his life.

In September 2010 a good friend of mine Alan Bugg was diagnosed with cancer (Non- Hodgkin’s Lymphoma) and whilst receiving treatment he said to me that he was thinking of starting up a charity. He was struggling financially and wanted to help others who were living with cancer, not able to work and experiencing the same problems. He said he wanted to call the charity Cancer is a Drag and I felt honoured when he then asked if I would design a logo for it.

My main goal for the logo was for it to look like the Awareness Ribbon that is used by different charities and I was adamant about this because it is such a well-recognised symbol throughout the world – but I wanted it to have an original twist. After some research I spotted a picture of a lady in thigh-high boots standing with one leg crossed in front of the other. Eureka! I scribbled my idea down and emailed it to Alan.

At first my scribble was hard for Alan to understand but with the ideas rushing through and filling my mind I designed the logo using Adobe Illustrator. Although it started as just an outline Alan loved it and I was so pleased!

When Alan was feeling well enough to talk next we decided together that the final version of the legs would be rainbow coloured so that it incorporated all of the standard colours used by society that symbolise all the different cancers and would also refer to all people living with or affected by the disease.

Since that day Our Legs now have many outfits/personalities to suit the occasion – just like a good girl should – and we also have a Drag King pair too!

Well done my friend. Love ya!
